2010 and 2011 were not the best years to travel West Africa. We were looking forward to visiting Côte d’Ivoire which offers some of the most beautiful beaches and bays in the world. The 2010 presidential election led to the 2010-2011 Ivorian crisis and the Second Ivorian Civil War. International organizations reported numerous human-rights violations by both sides. In Duekoue hundreds of people were killed. UN and French forces started military action. Hence all borders were closed and we were unable to enter from Ghana.
