General Information
General Unfortunately, Tajikistan does not appear high on the list of destinations visited by overlanders. For us Tajikistan was an incredible scenic country with some of the most beautiful, wild and remote terrain and mountains in the world. The main attraction for overlanders is the road trip on the ‘Pamir Highway’. At the time of our travels 2013 we did require a permit to travel Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO). We also witnessed some trouble in Khorog and clashes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajik forces along the border.
Tajikistan is part of Central Asia and completely landlocked. Since 1991 independent from the Soviet Union. Civil war erupted after the independence which lasted till 1997. Tajikistan is a poor, mountainous country with an economy dominated by minerals extraction, metals processing and agriculture. Over 1 million of its citizens work abroad and mainly in Russia. Mineral resources include silver, gold, uranium, antimony, tungsten, and coal. The 1992-97 civil war severely damaged an already weak economic infrastructure and caused a sharp decline in industrial and agricultural production. Today, Tajikistan is the poorest among the former Soviet republics. Because less than 7% of the land area is arable and cotton is the predominant crop, Tajikistan imports approximately 70% of its food. Tajikistan sits on one of the world’s highest volume illicit drug trafficking routes, between the Afghan opium production to the south and the illicit drug markets of Russia and Eastern Europe to the north. Some experts estimate the value of narcotics transiting Tajikistan is equivalent to 30%-50% of GDP
