Stretching across thousands of islands between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Indonesia offers something for almost every type of traveler. Overlanders can can relax on beaches, explore ancient temples, discover bustling cities, drive off road through mountains and rainforests, or experience traditional cultures that vary greatly from one region to another. The capital city, Jakarta, is located on the island of Java and is the country’s largest urban center. Another important destination on Java is Yogyakarta, which is particularly well known for its traditional arts, cultural heritage, and proximity to the magnificent Borobudur and Prambanan temple complexes. Bali is perhaps Indonesia’s best-known tourist destination. The island attracts visitors with its beaches, rice terraces, temples, markets, resorts, and distinctive Hindu culture. Places such as Ubud are popular for their artistic traditions and beautiful countryside, while coastal areas offer opportunities for swimming, surfing, and diving. One of Indonesia’s most remarkable regions is Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Kalimantan is especially important for travelers interested in nature and wildlife because much of the region is covered by tropical rainforest. The area is home to extraordinary wildlife, including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, and many species of birds. A overland visit to Kalimantan can provide a very different experience from the beaches and resorts of Bali. Overlanders can explore rivers, forests, and bush camp near or in traditional communities. Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan is particularly famous for its orangutans and river-based wildlife experiences. For tourists visiting Kalimantan, one of the most memorable experiences is traveling by boat through rainforest landscapes. Visitors can travel along the Sekonyer River and see rainforest scenery while learning about conservation efforts. Sumatra is known for its forests, volcanoes, lakes, and wildlife, while Sulawesi has distinctive landscapes and some of the world’s most interesting diving destinations. The eastern part of Indonesia, including the islands of Flores, Komodo, and parts of Papua, offers dramatic scenery and opportunities to experience marine life, traditional communities, and unique ecosystems. Indonesia’s is home to hundreds of ethnic groups and many regional languages and traditions. Although Bahasa Indonesia is the national language, local languages and cultural customs remain important throughout the country. Religion also plays a significant role in everyday life, with Islam being the country’s largest religion while Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, and traditional beliefs are also practiced. Getting around Indonesia can be an adventure in itself. Major cities and the majoritiy of the islands are connected by roads and ferries, while reaching remote parts of Kalimantan or eastern Indonesia may require off road driving in muddy conditions. Indonesia is much more than a single overland destination. Its thousands of islands create an enormous variety of experiences, from the cultural attractions of Java and the beaches of Bali to the rainforests of Kalimantan and the underwater landscapes of eastern Indonesia. 2.
