BENIN (WEST AFRICA)
Our first visit to Benin was in 1977 when Benin was a Marxist/Leninist (1975-1990) country under control of the Military Council of the Revolution. The capital of Benin even had a Red Square)
Corruption
No pay no passage. We thought we were used to seeing bribing in Africa after 3 years on the road, but this is done so openly and ruthless at the border with Niger and Benin we had never experienced anything like it in Africa. We decided not to pay, and were told we had to wait long time? We had plenty of time. But we blocked the road. Hence all traffic was unable to come past. After the statement we pay enough in foreign aid we were allowed to enter. No passport or carnet required?
Benin Fetish markets are amazing here animals are sold as medicines. For example, bats as Viagra, crushed monkey head for a good memory, crushed parrot for a good voice and crushed turtle for asthma.
An amazing country and a must do on your overland journey.
