Tibet, the remote and mainly-Buddhist territory known as the “roof of the world”, Tibet is the highest region on Earth, with an average elevation of 5,000 meters (or nearly 17000 feet). Many Tibetans believe in the exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, seen by his followers as a living god, but by China as a separatist threat.
It is the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people as well as other ethnic groups. However, due to Chinese pressure and benefits for Chinese citizens it is now also inhabited by considerable numbers (and increasing) of Chinese.
Tibet the authorities enforced severe restrictions on the freedoms of religion, expression, movement, and assembly. Tibetans who speak out over issues such as mass relocation, environmental degradation, or the phasing out of the Tibetan language in primary education are met with repression and jail.
No wonder the Chinese government will only allow you to travel in your own vehicle with a guide (Spy)
